The beginnings · at the dawn of humanity
Adam and Eve in the Bible
The first couple of humanity. Name meaning: Adam: “man,” a word related to “adamah,” the ground from which he was taken; Eve: “living,” because “she was the mother of all living” (Gen 3:20)
The first man and the first woman, created in the image of God and placed in the garden of Eden. Their disobedience brought sin and death into the world (Rom 5:12), yet it was to them that God gave the first promise of a Savior (Gen 3:15). Adam is “the figure of him that was to come”: Jesus Christ, the last Adam (Rom 5:14; 1 Cor 15:45).
Key moments
- God creates man and woman in his image Genesis 1:27
- The prohibition of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil Genesis 2:17
- God forms the woman from Adam’s rib Genesis 2:22
- Eve, then Adam, eat the forbidden fruit Genesis 3:6
- The promise of the woman’s offspring Genesis 3:15
- Driven out of the garden of Eden Genesis 3:23–24
- Seth is born after the death of Abel Genesis 4:25
- Adam dies at 930 Genesis 5:5
Strengths
- Bearers of God’s image
- Stewards of creation
- Unity as a couple
- Hope in the promise
Weaknesses
Eve conversed with the serpent and added to God’s word before giving in; Adam listened to his wife rather than to God, though he was right there with her (Gen 3:3, 6, 17). Caught in their guilt, they hide, then shift the blame onto each other and onto the serpent (Gen 3:10-13).
Lessons for today
- Do not argue with doubt about God’s Word: temptation always begins with “Yea, hath God said?” (Gen 3:1).
- Sin promises freedom but brings shame, fear, and separation; the only way out is to come out of hiding and confess (Gen 3:10; 1 John 1:9).
- Marriage is a divine institution: leaving one’s parents, being joined to one’s spouse, and becoming one flesh (Gen 2:24).
- Even in the moment of judgment, God opens a path of grace: he promises a Savior and himself clothes the guilty (Gen 3:15, 21).
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
