James, son of Zebedee in the Bible

The son of thunder, the first apostle to be martyred. Name meaning: The English form of Jacob (Greek Iakōbos), “he who supplants”; Jesus nicknames him, along with John, Boanerges, “sons of thunder” (Mark 3:17)

A Galilean fisherman and the brother of John, James leaves his father Zebedee’s boat to follow Jesus. Along with Peter and John, he is one of the three whom Jesus takes with him to Jairus’s house, up the mountain of the transfiguration, and into Gethsemane. Jesus gives him the nickname “son of thunder”: zealous but ambitious, he asks for a place of honor and is told that he will drink his Master’s cup. King Herod puts him to death by the sword (Acts 12:2), making him the first martyr among the Twelve.

Main books: Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts

Key moments

  • He leaves the boat and his father to follow Jesus Matthew 4:21–22
  • Jesus nicknames him Boanerges, “son of thunder” Mark 3:17
  • He is one of the three allowed into the synagogue ruler’s house Mark 5:37

Strengths

  • Readiness to follow
  • Burning zeal
  • Ambition
  • Perseverance

Weaknesses

James is hotheaded: he wants to call down fire from heaven on a Samaritan village (Luke 9:54) and, along with John, covets the top places, which angers the other ten (Mark 10:35-41). Like all the disciples, he runs away when Jesus is arrested (Matt 26:56).

Lessons for today

  • Following Jesus costs something: James leaves the boat, his father, and his livelihood (Matt 4:22).
  • Zeal needs the Master’s correction: Jesus came to save, not to destroy (Luke 9:55-56).
  • In the kingdom, greatness is measured by service, not by places of honor (Mark 10:43-45).
  • Staying faithful may mean drinking the Master’s cup: James dies by the sword (Mark 10:39; Acts 12:2).
And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:
Mark 3:17
And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:
Mark 10:39
But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Mark 10:43–45
