James, the Lord’s brother in the Bible
The skeptical brother who became a pillar of the church. Name meaning: The English form of Jacob (Greek Iakōbos), “he who supplants” or “he takes by the heel”
James is one of the brothers of Jesus named in the Gospels. At first an unbeliever, he meets the risen Christ and becomes the main leader of the church in Jerusalem, one of its “pillars” (Gal 2:9). At the Council of Jerusalem, he puts into words the decision to welcome Gentiles without placing them under the law. According to tradition, he is the author of the letter of James, which calls for a living faith that acts.

- Piety
- Humility
- Pastoral leadership
- A sense of unity
Weaknesses
During Jesus’ ministry, James did not believe in him, like his other brothers (John 7:5). Later, the arrival in Antioch of “certain… from James” led Peter to withdraw from the Gentiles (Gal 2:12), although the text does not say that James approved of that attitude.
Lessons for today
- The resurrection of Jesus transforms even the most skeptical, including those who knew him up close (John 7:5; 1 Cor 15:7).
- Real faith shows in action: listening to the Word is not enough, you have to put it into practice (James 1:22; 2:26).
- Look to Scripture for the answer to hard questions, so as to keep unity without denying grace (Acts 15:15-19).
- The greatest title is not “brother of the Lord,” but “servant of God” (James 1:1).
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
