The early church · Acts 20

Eutychus Falls from the Window

Paul and his companions spend seven days at Troas. On the first day of the week, the disciples gather to break bread. Paul, who is to leave the next day, talks with them and keeps on speaking until midnight. There are many lamps in the upstairs room. A young man named Eutychus, sitting in the window, sinks into a deep sleep as the talk goes on and on; overcome by sleep, he falls from the third story and is picked up dead. Paul goes down, bends over him, wraps his arms around him, and says: “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” He goes back upstairs, breaks the bread and eats, and then talks for a long while, until daybreak. Then he leaves. The young man is brought back alive, and it was a great comfort to everyone.

The lesson

The God who gives life is present in the church gathered around the Word and the bread: what was turning into a tragedy becomes “a great comfort.” His grace is stronger than our weakness, and the Word deserves our full attention.

And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.
