The life of Jesus · Mark 9

“I Believe! Help My Unbelief!”

Coming down from the mountain, Jesus finds his disciples in the middle of a crowd. A father steps forward: “Teacher, I brought my son to you, who has a mute spirit.” The spirit throws him to the ground, the boy foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth; the disciples could not drive it out. “O faithless generation… Bring him to me.” Since childhood, the spirit has often thrown him into fire and water. “If you can do anything, help us,” begs the father. “If you can!… All things are possible for one who believes.” The father cries out: “I believe! Help my unbelief!” Jesus commands the spirit to come out. The boy becomes like a corpse, but Jesus takes him by the hand and lifts him up. To the disciples: “This kind can come out only by prayer.”

The lesson

An imperfect faith can come to Jesus: the father has no confidence and no merit to offer, only a sincere cry, and Jesus answers. Power does not come from us but from God, and prayer is the way to receive it.

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
Mark 9:24
