The life of Jesus · Luke 2

Jesus in the Temple at Age Twelve

Every year, Joseph and Mary go up to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When Jesus is twelve, they go up according to the custom. When the feast is over, they start for home, but the boy stays behind in Jerusalem without their knowing it. Supposing him to be in their group of travelers, they go a day’s journey, then look for him among their relatives and acquaintances. When they do not find him, they return to Jerusalem. After three days, they find him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; everyone is amazed at his understanding and his answers. “Son, why have you treated us like this?” asks Mary. Jesus answers: “Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” His parents do not understand. He goes back down with them to Nazareth, is obedient to them, and grows in wisdom, in stature, and in favor.
