The life of Jesus · Matthew 14

Jesus Walks on the Water

Right after feeding the crowd, Jesus makes his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, then goes up the mountain alone to pray. The boat, in the middle of the sea, is tossed by the waves, for the wind is contrary. In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus comes to them, walking on the sea. Terrified, the disciples cry out, “It is a spirit!” Jesus reassures them: “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.” Peter dares to say, “Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.” “Come.” Peter walks on the water… but when he sees the wind, he becomes afraid and begins to sink: “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus catches him: “O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” As soon as they get into the boat, the wind ceases. The disciples worship him: “Of a truth thou art the Son of God.”
