The divided kingdom · 2 Kings 11–12
Joash, the King Hidden in the Temple
When her son Ahaziah dies, Athaliah rises up and destroys all the royal offspring. But Jehosheba, Ahaziah’s sister, steals little Joash away from among the king’s sons who are being slain and hides him with his nurse. He stays six years in the house of the LORD while Athaliah reigns. In the seventh year, the priest Jehoiada summons the captains of hundreds, makes a covenant with them, and shows them the king’s son. In the temple Joash receives the crown and the testimony, and he is anointed, and the people shout, “God save the king!” Athaliah comes running, crying “Treason!” and she is put to death. Joash is seven years old. He does what is right in the sight of the LORD as long as he follows Jehoiada, and he orders the temple repaired, using a chest with a hole bored in its lid.

Who is in this story
The lesson
Even when all seems lost, God preserves his promise: a child hidden six years in the temple saves the line of David. But Joash’s uprightness depended on his guide, Jehoiada. Borrowed faith does not hold up; each person must become faithful for himself.
And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.
