The early church · Acts 2
Pentecost
On the day of Pentecost, the disciples are all together in one place. Suddenly, a sound like a rushing mighty wind fills the house, and tongues like fire rest on each of them. They are all filled with the Holy Spirit and begin to speak in other tongues. Devout Jews from every nation hurry to the scene: each one hears them speaking in his own language about the wonderful works of God. Others mock: “These men are full of new wine.” Peter stands up with the eleven and answers that they are not drunk: it is only the third hour of the day! This is what the prophet Joel foretold. He proclaims that God has raised this crucified Jesus and made him “both Lord and Christ.” Pierced to the heart, the crowd asks, “What shall we do?” — “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ.” That day, about three thousand souls are added to the disciples.
