The early church · Acts 8
Simon the Sorcerer
After Stephen’s death, the scattered believers spread the word. Philip goes down to Samaria and preaches Christ there: unclean spirits come out, paralytics and the lame are healed, and there is great joy in the city. A man named Simon had previously practiced sorcery there and claimed to be someone great; everyone said, “This man is the great power of God.” But men and women believe Philip and are baptized. Simon himself believes and is baptized. When Peter and John, sent from Jerusalem, lay hands on the Samaritans and they receive the Holy Spirit, Simon offers them money: “Give me also this power.” Peter rebukes him: “Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.” He calls him to repent; Simon answers, “Pray ye to the Lord for me.”

Who is in this story
The lesson
God’s gift cannot be bought: it is received by grace, with an upright and repentant heart. We cannot bargain with God or put his power to work for our own glory.
But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
