The Passion and the Resurrection · Luke 24

The Disciples on the Road to Emmaus

On the very day of the resurrection, two disciples are walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, a village sixty stadia away (about seven miles). They are talking sadly about the recent events when Jesus draws near and walks along with them, but their eyes are kept from recognizing him. One of them, Cleopas, tells him everything: “We had hoped that he was the one who would redeem Israel.” Jesus answers: “Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?” Then, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explains to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. As evening falls, they urge him: “Stay with us.” At the table, he takes the bread, gives thanks, and breaks it: their eyes are opened, they recognize him, and he vanishes. “Did not our hearts burn within us?” That very hour, they head back to Jerusalem to tell the eleven what happened to them.

The lesson

The risen Jesus walks with us even when we do not recognize him. He reveals himself through the Scriptures, makes our hearts burn, and turns our sadness into testimony.

And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
