The life of Jesus · Matthew 4
The Temptation in the Wilderness
After his baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he is hungry. The tempter approaches: “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” Jesus answers, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” The devil then sets him on the pinnacle of the temple and urges him to throw himself down, quoting a psalm himself. Jesus replies, “Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” Finally, on an exceedingly high mountain, he shows him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory: “All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.” “Get thee hence, Satan,” Jesus answers, for it is written that God alone is to be worshipped. The devil leaves him, and angels come and minister to him.
