The life of Jesus · John 2
The Wedding at Cana
There is a wedding in Cana of Galilee. The mother of Jesus is there, and Jesus has been invited along with his disciples. The wine runs out. “They have no wine,” Mary tells her son. Jesus answers, “Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.” Still, she says to the servants, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” Nearby stand six stone waterpots, used for the Jewish rites of purification. “Fill the waterpots with water,” Jesus orders, and they fill them to the brim. “Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.” He tastes the water that has become wine and, not knowing where it came from, calls the bridegroom over: people usually serve the good wine first, but “thou hast kept the good wine until now.” This was the first of Jesus’ miracles: he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.
