Abigail in the Bible

The wise woman who calmed David. Name meaning: “My father is joy” (probable meaning)

The wife of the rich and foolish Nabal, Abigail is “a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance” (1 Sam 25:3). When her husband insults David, she rushes out to meet him with provisions and keeps him from shedding blood needlessly; David blesses her good sense (1 Sam 25:33). Widowed soon after, she marries David, follows him through his trials, and bears him a son at Hebron (2 Sam 3:3).

Main books: 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Chronicles

Key moments

  • She loads provisions on donkeys without telling Nabal 1 Samuel 25:18
  • She bows before David: “On me be the blame” 1 Samuel 25:24
  • She tells him he will be ruler over Israel 1 Samuel 25:30
  • David blesses her: “Blessed be thy good sense” 1 Samuel 25:33
  • Nabal dies, struck by the LORD 1 Samuel 25:38
  • She becomes David’s wife 1 Samuel 25:42
  • She is rescued from the Amalekites at Ziklag 1 Samuel 30:18
  • She bears David a son, Chileab, at Hebron 2 Samuel 3:3

Strengths

  • Good sense
  • Courage
  • Humility
  • Initiative
  • Faith in God

Weaknesses

The Bible lays no fault at her door. We can only note that she acts without her husband’s knowledge (1 Sam 25:19) and waits until morning to tell him everything (25:36-37): in a household ruled by a foolish man, she chooses first to save her own people.

Lessons for today

  • Good sense and humility can stop violence before it breaks out: “A soft answer turneth away wrath” (1 Sam 25:24-35; Prov 15:1).
  • When danger is close, act quickly and generously instead of waiting (1 Sam 25:18-19).
  • Do not take justice into your own hands: Abigail reminds David that it was the LORD who held him back from avenging himself, as Paul will say later (1 Sam 25:26, 31; Rom 12:19).
  • You can speak the truth to a powerful person with respect: Abigail calls him “my lord” and dares to tell him about the reign to come (1 Sam 25:28-31).
Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.
1 Samuel 25:3
That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the Lord shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.
1 Samuel 25:31
And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.
1 Samuel 25:33
