David in the Bible

The king after God’s own heart. Name meaning: “Beloved” (probable meaning)

David, the youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem, rises from the pastures to the throne of Israel. Shepherd, musician, conqueror of Goliath, fugitive hunted by Saul, he reigns forty years and makes Jerusalem his capital. Despite grave failures, he remains the man “after God’s own heart” through his sincere repentance, and God promises him an eternal throne, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the “son of David.”

Main books: 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 1 Chronicles, Psalms

Strengths

  • Courage
  • Worshiper and poet
  • Loyalty
  • Sincere repentance

Weaknesses

David committed adultery with Bathsheba and had Uriah killed (2 Sam 11); he was weak with his sons, leaving Amnon and then Absalom unpunished (2 Sam 13:21); and he sinned by numbering the people (2 Sam 24:10). His lie to Ahimelech also led to the massacre of the priests of Nob (1 Sam 22:22).

Lessons for today

  • God looks at the heart, not at appearance: the youngest, left with the sheep, becomes king (1 Sam 16:7).
  • The battle is the LORD’s: faith faces giants with what God has placed in our hands (1 Sam 17:47).
  • Hidden sin is eventually exposed; true repentance confesses it plainly (2 Sam 12:13; Ps 51:3-4).
  • Wait for God’s timing instead of taking justice into your own hands: David would not lay a hand on Saul (1 Sam 26:9-11).
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7
And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
2 Samuel 7:16
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Psalms 51:10
