Ahab in the Bible

The king who served Baal. Name meaning: “Brother of the father” (probable meaning of the Hebrew); the Bible does not explain it

The son of Omri, Ahab reigns twenty-two years over Israel from Samaria. Married to the Sidonian Jezebel, he serves Baal and does “more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him” (1 Kgs 16:30-33). Elijah confronts him, announcing the drought, triumphing at Carmel, and denouncing the murder of Naboth; Ahab humbles himself for a time, but dies at Ramoth-gilead, struck by an arrow shot “at random” (1 Kgs 22:34).

Main books: 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles

Strengths

  • Idolatry
  • Covetousness
  • Weakness
  • Fleeting humility

Weaknesses

Ahab serves Baal, lets Jezebel kill off the prophets of the LORD and arrange the murder of Naboth, and spares Ben-hadad, whom the LORD had delivered into his hand (1 Kgs 16:31; 18:4; 20:34, 42; 21:15-16). He humbles himself once (21:27), but afterward hates the prophet Micaiah because he never prophesies “good” concerning him (22:8).

Lessons for today

  • Compromise begins with an alliance: Ahab marries an idolatrous princess, then bows down to Baal (1 Kgs 16:31).
  • Covetousness leads to crime: Naboth’s legitimate refusal becomes a murder dressed up as legal process (1 Kgs 21:2-16).
  • God notices humility, even in the guiltiest, and delays his judgment (1 Kgs 21:27-29).
  • Surrounded by flatterers, we stop hearing the truth: Ahab prefers four hundred obliging prophets to Micaiah (1 Kgs 22:6-8).
And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord above all that were before him.
1 Kings 16:30
And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the Lord, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.
1 Kings 21:19
Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.
1 Kings 21:29
