The beginnings · at the dawn of humanity
Cain and Abel in the Bible
The first two brothers. Name meaning: Cain: a name the Bible connects with Eve’s cry, “I have gotten a man” (Gen 4:1); Abel: “breath, vapor,” the Hebrew word translated “vanity” in Ecclesiastes
The first children of Adam and Eve, Cain the farmer and Abel the shepherd each bring an offering to the LORD. God accepts Abel’s, offered in faith, but not Cain’s; despite God’s warning, Cain kills his brother in the field: the first murder in history. Abel becomes the first righteous man whose blood “crieth” to God (Gen 4:10); Cain, who “was of that wicked one” (1 John 3:12), remains the model of brother-hatred.
Key moments
- Birth of Cain, then of Abel Genesis 4:1–2
- The two offerings before the LORD Genesis 4:4
- “Sin lieth at the door” Genesis 4:7
- Cain kills Abel in the field Genesis 4:8
- “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Genesis 4:9
- The mark put on Cain Genesis 4:15
- Abel listed among the heroes of faith Hebrews 11:4
Strengths
- Abel’s faith
- Offering the best (Abel)
- Cain’s jealousy
- Unchecked anger (Cain)
Weaknesses
Cain lets anger and jealousy master him despite God’s warning, kills his brother, then lies (“I know not”) and complains about his punishment without a word of repentance (Gen 4:5-14). Scripture finds no fault with Abel, whom it calls “righteous” (Heb 11:4).
Lessons for today
- God looks at the worshiper’s heart before the offering: Abel offered the best of his flock “by faith” (Gen 4:4; Heb 11:4).
- Unchecked anger opens the door to sin: “thou shalt rule over him” (Gen 4:7; Eph 4:26-27).
- We really are our brothers’ keepers: anyone who hates his brother is already a murderer in God’s eyes (Gen 4:9; 1 John 3:15).
- The blood of Jesus “speaketh better things than that of Abel”: where Abel’s blood cried out against the guilty, Christ’s brings forgiveness (Heb 12:24).
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper? And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
