Judah in the Bible

The repentant brother from whom kings descend. Name meaning: “Praise”: Leah says, “Now will I praise the LORD” (Gen 29:35)

The fourth son of Jacob and Leah, Judah proposes selling Joseph rather than killing him, then drifts far from his brothers and falls into the affair with Tamar (Gen 37–38). But God transforms him: he becomes surety for Benjamin and offers to become a slave in his place (Gen 43:9; 44:33). The dying Jacob promises him the scepter “until Shiloh come” (Gen 49:10): from his tribe come David and Jesus Christ, “the Lion of the tribe of Judah” (Rev 5:5).

Strengths

  • Responsibility
  • Sacrifice
  • Leadership

Weaknesses

Judah proposes selling Joseph rather than killing him, but still hands him over to slavery and lets Jacob mourn his son for many days (Gen 37:26-35). He drifts away from his brothers, breaks his word to Tamar, turns to who he thinks is a prostitute (Gen 38:11, 14-16), and then condemns Tamar without looking at his own sin (Gen 38:24).

Lessons for today

  • God transforms those who have failed: the brother who sold Joseph offers himself as a slave to save Benjamin (Gen 37:26-28; 44:33).
  • Admitting your fault opens the way to making things right: “She hath been more righteous than I” (Gen 38:26).
  • God writes his story with wounded families: Tamar, Judah’s daughter-in-law, appears in the genealogy of Jesus (Gen 38:29; Matt 1:3).
  • A true leader takes responsibility, like Judah, who answers for Benjamin (Gen 43:9); Jesus, “the Lion of the tribe of Judah,” is the perfect leader (Rev 5:5).
And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
Genesis 38:26
Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.
Genesis 44:33
The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
Genesis 49:10
