The life of Jesus · Mark 4
Jesus Calms the Storm
When evening comes, after a day of teaching by the sea, Jesus says to his disciples, “Let us pass over unto the other side.” They send the crowd away and take him along in the boat just as he is; other boats go with them. Suddenly a great storm of wind arises: the waves beat into the boat, which is already filling up. And Jesus? He is in the stern, asleep on a cushion. The disciples wake him: “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” Awakened, he rebukes the wind and says to the sea, “Peace, be still.” The wind ceases, and there is a great calm. Then he turns to them: “Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?” Overcome with awe, the disciples say to one another, “What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” The man asleep in the boat is the Master of creation.
