The life of Jesus · John 4

Jesus Heals the Royal Official’s Son

Jesus returns to Galilee, to Cana, where he had turned water into wine. In Capernaum, a royal official has a sick son, close to death. Hearing that Jesus has come from Judea, he goes to find him and begs him to come down and heal his child. Jesus says to him: “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” But the father insists: “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus answers: “Go; your son lives.” The man believes the word and goes on his way. As he is going down, his servants meet him: “Your child lives.” The fever left the boy the day before, at the seventh hour, the very hour when Jesus had spoken. The father believed, and his whole household with him. This was the second miracle Jesus did after returning to Galilee.

The lesson

Faith rests on the word of Jesus alone. The official believes it and heads home without seeing any sign, and the healing is confirmed at that very hour: the Lord’s word works from a distance and leads a whole household to believe.

Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
John 4:50
