The life of Jesus · John 4

The Woman at the Well

On his way to Galilee, Jesus passes through Samaria. Tired, he sits down by Jacob’s well, near Sychar, about the sixth hour. A Samaritan woman comes to draw water. “Give me to drink,” Jesus says to her. She is surprised: Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus offers her living water: “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.” Then he reveals her life to her: she has had five husbands, and the man she has now is not her husband. “I perceive that thou art a prophet,” she says. Jesus tells her that true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. When she mentions the Messiah, he declares, “I that speak unto thee am he.” Leaving her waterpot behind, she goes back to the city: “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did!” Many Samaritans believe in him: he is indeed the Savior of the world.

The lesson

Jesus crosses every barrier to reach a woman people looked down on: he knows our whole life, and he offers the living water that alone quenches the soul’s thirst.

Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
John 4:13–14
