John on Patmos: The Vision of the Glorified Christ

John is on the island of Patmos “for the word of God.” On the Lord’s day, he is in the Spirit. Behind him, a loud voice like a trumpet commands, “What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches.” He turns around: seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of them one like a son of man. His hair is white as snow, his eyes like a flame of fire, his voice like the sound of many waters. He holds seven stars in his right hand; a sharp two-edged sword comes out of his mouth; his face shines like the sun. John falls at his feet as dead. The Lord lays his right hand on him: “Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore.”

Who is in this story

The lesson

Christ is alive, glorious, and present in the midst of his churches. He holds the keys of death: whoever leans on him, even in tribulation, has nothing to fear.

And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
