Jonathan and His Armor-Bearer at Michmash
The Philistines are camped at Michmash, and Saul is down to six hundred men. Without telling his father, Jonathan says to the young man who carries his armor, “Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.” He sets a sign: if the Philistines say, “Come up unto us,” the LORD has delivered them. They say it. Jonathan climbs up on his hands and feet, his companion right behind him, and about twenty men fall. Panic spreads through the camp, “a very great trembling,” and the Philistines turn their swords on one another. The LORD delivers Israel. But Saul had bound the people by an oath not to eat, and Jonathan, who did not know it, tasted some honey: his father wants him put to death. The people rescue him.

Who is in this story
The lesson
Jonathan’s faith does not count soldiers: it dares to step forward, sure that the LORD can save “by many or by few” (14:6). God honors that trust, while Saul’s rash oath shows how zeal without wisdom can hurt the very people it means to serve.
And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few.
