The life of Jesus · Luke 16

The Rich Man and Lazarus

Jesus tells the story of a rich man, clothed in purple and fine linen, who lives in luxury every day. At his gate lies a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longs to be fed with the crumbs that fall from the rich man’s table; even the dogs come and lick his sores. The beggar dies: the angels carry him to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man dies too, and is buried. In Hades, in torment, he lifts up his eyes and begs Abraham to send Lazarus to cool his tongue. Abraham answers that between them there is “a great gulf fixed.” The rich man then asks that his five brothers be warned. Abraham replies, “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.” And if they do not hear them, neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead.

The lesson

This life is the time to listen to the Word of God and repent: Moses and the prophets are enough. Wealth must not make us blind to the poor person lying at our door, because after death no crossing is possible any longer.

And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
Luke 16:31
